The house mouse (Mus musculus) is one of the most widely distributed and successful mammals in the world. It has dull greyish-brown fur and the tail, which is the same length as the body, is thicker and scalier than that of other species of mice. It is accompanied by a distinctive strong ‘stale’ odour and its presence can easily be detected by means of its droppings. Forms of this species living in association with man (‘commensal’ forms) tend to be larger and darker than ‘wild’ forms and have longer tails. The voice is a familiar high-pitched squeak.

Animal vocalizations[]

Mice mainly communicate in two ways:via human-audible squeaks when experiencing pain in fear; or through higher-frequency ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) used during courtship and other social interactions. Reproduction[]

Female mice (Also known as does) go into heat for 4 or 5 days. Once pregnant, female mice give birth after 3 weeks. Litters consist of 5 or 8 pups or pinkies, and females can reproduce up to 10 times per year. At the start of the mouse life cycle, newborns are hairless and blind.

Animal Intelligence[]

Mice and rats are so smart they can recognize their names and respond when called. Mice are choosy. They like variety and enjoy picking around in their food-eating the tastiest parts first and separating out what they dislike. Female mice with litters will vigorously defend their nests and young. In fact furthermore mice are so smart that they can avoid major non-humane mouse traps (Especially the glue traps) and are also intelligent enough to go through a mazes from laboratory experiments.

The main enemies to mice are mostly cats including foxes, owls, ferrets, weasels, mongooses, large lizards, grass snakes, red-tailed hawks and falcons.

Fur Color Patterns[]

In the wild they vary in color from grey and light brown to black (individual hairs are actually agouti coloured), but domesticated fancy and laboratory mice are produced in many colors ranging from white to champagne to black. They have short hair and some, but not all, sub-species have a light belly.
