The common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) is a species of bat from the rainforests of Mexico, Central America, and South America. It is one of three extant species of vampire bat, the other two being the hairy-legged and the white-winged vampire bats. It is the only known mammal to only obtain nutrients by drinking the blood of other animals. It is also one of the few bats that is capable of crawling on the ground, an ability it uses to help it sneak up on its prey.
