The Jungle Book is a book written by Rudyard Kipling. The story follows a man-cub Mowgli, and his adventures with Bagheera, a black panther, and Mowgli's preferred mentor, Baloo, a sleepy brown bear (sloth bear or moon bear in some versions), Kaa, a large 100 year old python, Hathi, an old Asian elephant with 3 sons, and the Seeonee Wolf Pack, led by a male named Akela, trying to keep him safe from Shere Khan, a power-hungry bengal tiger with a deformed front leg, Tabaqui, a cowardly but evil jackal, and the Bandar-Log, a group of monkeys with no leadership.
Differences Between Disney Version[]
In Disney's rendition, the Bandar-Log monkeys are led by King Louie, a rowdy orangutan, voiced by Louis Prima, while the Bandar-Log in Kipling's story have no leadership, let alone a king. In Disney's rendition, Shere Khan, voiced by George Sanders, has no physical injuries, meanwhile, Rudyard Kipling depicts the tiger with a deformed right front leg. Rudyard Kipling states that Hathi the elephant has scars from humans, and hates them, though he tolerates Mowgli to an extent, but Disney removed the scars on one of Hathi's tusks, voiced by J. Pat O'Malley, and gave him only one son. Kaa the python is a protagonist in Kipling's story, but, in the Disney version, he, voiced by Sterling Holloway, was changed to an antagonist, because they felt audiences would not sympathise with a snake character. Tabaqui, Ikki, and Jacala were all present in Kipling's book, but were not used in Disney's movie. However, Disney added not only King Louie, but also Buzzie, Flaps, Dizzy, and Ziggy, a quartet of vultures, and the unused Rocky the rhino.
