Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) are in between sizes from the larger African bush elephant and the smaller African forest elephant. They have twin-domed foreheads, short bristly hair, arched backs, and smaller ears than their African kin. There are 5 subspecies: the Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), the Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus), the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranae), the Borneo pygmy elephant (Elephas maximus borneii), and the Javan elephant (Elephas maximus sondaica).
