The Bornean Pygmy Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) is a subspecies of Asian Elephant native to Asia. They have long legs, big ears, long tails, twin-domed foreheads, light grey skin, short bristly hair, long prehensile trunks, and sharp tusks in bulls.
Lifespan[]
Borneo pygmy elephants can live up to 80 years in the wild. Up to 40 years in captivity, due to foot infections, as with most other elephants.
Diet[]
Bornean Pygmy Elephants eat grass, hay and fruit.
Conservation Status[]
Borneo pygmy elephants are listed as Critically Endangered, because people often hunt them for their tusks.
Controversies[]
Some tourist shows and circuses treat their elephants very, very badly. They are often forced to carry tourists or swim for entertainment, and if they don't cooperate, their handlers hit them in the face with bullhooks, which hurts the elephants.
