Together with the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), the bonobo (Also called the hippie chimp or pygmy chimp) (Pan paniscus) is man's closest living relative. Although a similar size to the better-known chimp, the bonobo is often referred to as the pygmy chimpanzee due to the more slender body shape of this species. Like chimpanzees, bonobos have longer forearms than legs, long fingers and mobile shoulder joints. The coat is black although it may turn grey with age and, in contrast to chimpanzees, the face is black, and the hair on the crown projects sideways, as opposed to backwards. The bonobo is only found in and native to one East-central African country, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Bonobos live in very large groups, of up to 150 members. Bonobos were the second last great ape species to be discovered to the [Tapanuli orangutan], and they're listed as endangered by the IUCN.
Lifespan[]
Bonobos can live up to 50 years in the wild. Up to 60 years in captivity.
Animal Intelligence[]
Bonobos were More skilled at solving tasks related to theory of mind or understanding of social causality, while chimpanzees were more skilled at tasks requiring the use of tools and understanding of physical causality.
Diet[]
The diet of the bonobo apes are frugivores (Meaning that they love to feast on fruit). While fruit is their favorite food, they also eat leaves, flowers, seeds, bark, African fungus, honey, and carrion. More than 113 types of plants make up their diet.
