It seems that no animal has inspired the imagination of man more than the Lion (Panthera leo) (Pronounciation: pan-THUR-uh LEE-oh). Characterised as fearsome, courageous and majestic, the lion’s strength and ferocity has earned it the title of ‘King of the Beasts’ in many cultures. As one of the largest of the pantherines, the lion is built to prey on animals many times its size, its strong jaws and muscular build emanating an image of sheer power. Male lions are larger than females and typically posses a mane of hair around their heads, a feature unique amongst the cat family (Felidae). The rest of the coat is short and tawny in colour for both sexes, paler on the underside, without markings. The backs of the ears and the tuft of hair at the tip of the tail are dark brown or black. Lion cubs are born with brown rosettes that disappear with maturity, although some lions retain faint spots. Unlike most panthers, lions are the most social, with related females living together in prides and males forming coalitions.

Males can live up from 8 to 10 years while females can live up from 15 to 16 years.

Animal Intelligence[]

Lions are highly intelligent considered the smartest of the big cats. In much of African folklore is portrayed as having low intelligence and is easily tricked by other animals.

They roar, snarl, growl, and hum or puff.

Reproduction[]

A dominant sigma male lion mounts the lionesses, then the lionesses become pregnant for 100 days, and give birth to a litter of 3 to 5 cubs.

Distribution and habitat[]

African lions are typically found in Savannas, plains, grasslands, mountains, dense bush and open woodlands within the Serengeti of Tanzania and the Masai Mara of Kenya, Including the Eastern African plains of Uganda's Kidepo valley and Murchison falls along with the cheetahs and elephants, Akagera national park in the Eastern-central African plains of Rwanda and the Eastern-central African plains and savannas of Democratic Republic of the Congo's Virunga national park, where prey is abundant. They can be found in smaller numbers in the semidesert and mountain habitats.

Natural predators[]

Their main predators and enemies are other lions, including hyenas, men and crocodiles.

Animal Symbolism[]

To the Maasai tribe, lions have a complex role in Maasai culture, representing both predators and symbols of royalty, conquest, represents the moon, femininity, valor, pride, wisdom, authority, courage and protection.

Symbols of strength and courage

Lions are admired for their grace and independent nature and have been a part of the Maasai culture for many generations. In the past, killing a lion was a rite of passage for young Maasai men to become warriors, known as Morani. This ritual, called Alamayo, involved tracking and spearing a lion with traditional weapons like spears, bows and arrows, clubs and machetes. The young warriors would return to the tribe with new status and respect.

Reverence

Maasai also revere lions, and some say that living with lions is beautiful. However, lions can also trigger fear when they come into close contact with people and livestock.

In South Africa as apex predator, the lion is viewed as the true guardian of the land, while the white lion, in particular, is believed to be Kings of Kings by the Zulu tribe, an angelic guardian presiding over the Timbavati wilderness, with a vitally important role in the sensitive ecology of the region.
